What does Apricity mean?
Apricity is the warmth of the sun on a winter day. I named my practice Apricity Behavioral Health because my intention is to allow you to be at ease as if you are relaxing into the warmth of the sun on a cold winter day.
What's an expat?
The term "expat" is short for expatriate; someone who is temporarily living outside of their country of origin.
How much does it cost?
Each session is 50-60 minutes and cost USD$60 ($65 effective February 1, 2019) payable via my secure virtual office.
What does a therapist do in a session?
Therapists listen to your story, point out patterns of behavior, help you understand and process your feelings, and then work with you to find ways to manage your challenges. The days of lying on a couch answering, "How does that make you feel?" are long gone.
How long is a session?
Each session is 50 minutes, usually scheduled about once a week. If your situation requires it, we can meet more often. It is important that you arrive on time because your appointment cannot be extended due to lateness.
How long until I start to feel better?
It depends on your situation and the nature of the problem. However, progress does happen much quicker in clients who are committed to having open, honest conversations and are willing to make changes to their thoughts and behaviors.
I just want to talk to you via text and email. Can we do that?
No. While Apricity is innovational in that it is entirely online, I do not provide therapeutic services via text or email. My preferred mode of communication is initially a very brief phone call, then we switch to 50-minute video chat sessions. Email is fine for brief exchanges, such as changes in scheduling, quick questions, etc. I do not provide treatment via email. It’s not secure and I do not want to risk violating your privacy.
How do I get a free 15-minute phone consultation?
Go to the Contact page and fill in the form. Check yes under the free consultation section. Be sure to include your location so that I know what time zone you are in and provide a few times that you are available. I will email you to confirm a date and time that suits both of us.
What's the point of the free 15-minute phone consultation?
I find that’s the best way to get to know each other a little bit; you can ask me anything you want and I can get a sense of how I can help you. Also, during the phone call I can explain how my virtual office, video chat and payment system works and answer any questions you may have about that.
What do you mean, "virtual office?"
When you click on Secure Client Login, you are taken to my virtual office. Think of it as an actual office. It is the space where you will complete paperwork, make appointments, have video counseling sessions, initiate payments, etc. All of that is done after you create an account with a unique username and password. My virtual office is entirely secure and complies with all US HIPPA regulations.
What insurances do you take?
While you are welcome to submit your own claim, I currently do not direct bill any insurance plans. There are several reasons for this. Insurance companies require therapists to provide a legitimate diagnosis in order to reimburse for services. This becomes a part of your permanent health record that can affect security clearances, adoption processes and other background checks. Also, insurance companies dictate how many sessions they will cover given your diagnosis. This “one-size-fits-all” policy is the antithesis of my individualized approach. Each person’s situation is unique with varying levels of intensity and circumstance. I do not feel it is appropriate for insurance companies to stress the therapeutic process by pressuring both you and I to work according to their prescribed timeline.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?
I charge for appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice unless we can find another time that week that works for us both. If we are able to, before the weekend, I will allow you to reschedule at no extra fee.
